You Can Trust Yourself Again
You Can Trust Yourself Again
There was a time when I never questioned myself.
When I was a senior in high school, my classmates voted me “Most Likely to Be U.S. President.”
Looking back, it makes me smile.
Not because I ever planned to run for president, but because it reminds me of the person I was. I loved running for office in the organizations I belonged to. I wasn’t afraid to raise my hand, speak up, or put myself out there. I believed I could figure things out. I trusted myself.
Then life happened.
Years later, after my divorce, I found myself asking a very different question.
Where did that confident girl go?
Divorce has a way of making you question everything.
Your decisions.
Your judgment.
Your future.
For many women, especially after a long marriage, there’s an added layer of doubt.
How did I not see this coming?
Can I trust my instincts anymore?
What if I make another mistake?
Those questions don’t just shake your confidence. They shake your identity.
I remember thinking that I needed to find that confident young woman again.
At first, I thought confidence would come back all at once, like flipping a switch.
It didn’t.
Instead, it came back one small decision at a time.
Making a phone call I had been avoiding.
Speaking up when I normally would have stayed quiet.
Trying something new.
Making a decision without asking everyone else what they thought first.
Every one of those moments reminded me that I was more capable than I had given myself credit for.
Here’s what I eventually realized.
I wasn’t becoming someone new.
I was reconnecting with someone who had been there all along.
Life had changed me. Divorce had changed me. But it hadn’t erased me.
That confident young woman wasn’t gone.
She had simply been buried beneath grief, fear, uncertainty, and years of putting other people’s needs ahead of my own.
Maybe that’s where you find yourself today.
If you’re questioning every decision or wondering whether you’ll ever trust yourself again, I want you to know something.
You don’t have to wake up tomorrow overflowing with confidence.
You just have to make one decision you can be proud of today.
Confidence isn’t built by having all the answers.
It’s built by keeping the promises you make to yourself.
One choice.
One conversation.
One boundary.
One brave step at a time.
You may not recognize yourself yet.
But she’s still there.
And with every small step you take, you’ll begin to trust yourself again.
I know.
Because I found that girl again.
